The Japanese electronics company Fujitsu was also expected to announce a recall of Sony batteries used in its range of personal computers.

The problem, which happens only in rare cases, occurs when microscopic metal particles inside the batteries come into contact with other parts of the battery, causing the computer to short-circuit. Most affected PCs simply overheat but there have been cases of them catching fire.

Toshiba said there were no reports of its computers catching fire and it had ordered the recall in response to a request from Sony, amid growing anxiety among users.HSTNN-XB72, “We wanted to assure and satisfy our customers,” said Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Omori.

Analysts said that Sony’s future as a supplier appeared secure. “Over the longer term, Sony will remain one of the top-class battery suppliers, and it is unrealistic that PC makers halt procurement from Sony,” Morgan Stanley analyst Masahiro Ono told Reuters.GR995, Yusuke Sakai, manager of equities trading at Mizuho Securities, said: “The saga goes on, but the recall programme itself has been partly factored into the share price.”

On Thursday, Lenovo, the world’s third-largest computer maker, had announced the recall of 526,000 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that come with ThinkPad computers sold after February 2005.

Lenovo, a Chinese firm that took over the ThinkPad from IBM in May 2005, confirmed that one of the models had burst into flames I40-3S4400-G1L3, at Los Angeles international airport this month. The firm estimated that between 5% and 10% of machines were affected but it expected “minimal” impact from the recall, which is being paid for by Sony.

In Tokyo Sony shares fell by about 1% to 4,770 yen yesterday after it announced the global recall, despite a 0.15% rise in the benchmark Nikkei average. Sony shares have lost 8.8% since Dell announced its battery recall last month.

Compatibility

Any laptop battery or UPS that complies with the Windows, Advanced  Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification should be able to report information to BatteryMon. Note that only Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP support this interface. Windows95 and NT are not supported. Older PCs may also have a problem if their BIOS does not support ACPI. Some features may not be supported by some battery types, typically they will report only partial information in this case. It has been also been noted that several UPS manufacturers are not providing compliant device drivers.

Status Information

The following information is provided for each installed battery (when available, as not all batteries will support all of these features).

• Status: Indicates the current status of this particular battery. e.g., “Charging”, “Discharging”, “Not in use”.
• Manufacturer: The name of the company that manufactures the battery pack.
• Device Name: This is usually the model number of the battery pack, as defined by the manufacturer.
• Serial number: The serial number of the device as defined by the  manufacturer.
• Unique ID: An identification string, which is unique across all battery packs.
• Time remaining: A rough estimate of how much time remains before the battery is fully discharged.
• Battery Temperature: The temperature inside the battery pack.
• Date of manufacture: The date when the battery was manufactured.
• Type of use: Indicates if the batteries normal use is to provide power for normal operations or if the battery is a fail safe / backup device. (Laptop battery or UPS)
• Rechargeable: Indicates if the battery is rechargeable or not.
• Chemistry: The type of battery. Typical values are: Lead Acid, Lithium Ion, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, Nickel Zinc, Rechargeable Alkaline-Manganese.
• Design capacity: The theoretical capacity of the new laptop batteries when new. Measured in milliwatts hours (mWh) for most batteries.
• Full charge capacity: The battery’s current fully charged capacity. In some batteries it is possible to compare this value to the designed capacity to estimate the battery’s wear.
• Alert levels: The manufacturer’s suggestion of when a “Low” and “Warning” battery alert should occur.
• Bias: Some batteries reserve a small charge that is biased out of the battery’s Full Charge Capacity and Current Capacity values to show “0″ as the critical battery level. Critical bias is analogous to setting a fuel gauge to show “empty” when there are several liters of fuel left.
• Charge cycles: The count of the number of charge/discharge cycles the battery has experienced. This provides a means to determine the battery’s wear.
• Voltage: The current battery voltage in Volts across the battery terminals.
• Charge Rate: The current rate of battery charge or discharge. For most batteries  this value will be in mWh.

Why I Love My Laptop

Are laptops absolutely necessary? Probably not, unless you are me.

When I received a laptop a couple of years ago, my whole world changed. I became less stressed, grew 57Y4565 three inches taller, lost 20 pounds and developed sparkling white teeth. Well, maybe not, but I did grow less stressed.

Getting a laptop is a definite choice to be made. Laptops are generally more expensive than desktops and may have some limitations in terms of power and capabilities. They also tend to become appendages, never far from their owner. I know one full time employee of the corporate world who got reprimanded for bringing (and using) a personal laptop computer on company time.
I can understand that employee’s position exactly. For me, the computer was already an appendage. I keep everything on it, from household appointments to work contacts, recipes, home design ideas and article assignments. I work from home and am still responsible for child care and running the household during the day. I try to make it all work and the laptop is a big asset to me.

While writing a 1,000 word article about diapering a baby, while actually diapering a PA3475U-1BRS baby hasn’t gotten any easier, at least there are no cords to get in the way of the poo. And yes, I have been known (sorry honey) to lock myself in the bathroom with the laptop, five-and-a-half seconds after my husband gets home from work, when I am on deadline.

The biggest reason, and the inspiration for this article happens to be occurring right now as I type. It is six am. The rest of the household is still sound asleep, a prime time to get any work done. Instead of sequestering myself in the dark basement that is also known as Mommy’s office, I am here sitting out on the back porch.
